Board-Certified Veterinary Internist & Interim CEO

Steve Shadwick, DVM, DACVIM, received his veterinary degree from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation, he completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. In 2011, he completed his small animal internal medicine residency at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital and was hired as the second specialist at AERC.

Dr. Shadwick enjoys the challenges of internal medicine cases, and he appreciates the help and support of his skilled internal medicine team and colleagues at AERC. The varied experiences, strengths, and teamwork of the emergency and specialty teams at AERC motivate his commitment to providing the best possible care for his patients. “You really can’t find a more cohesive, intelligent, supportive or fun group of veterinarians or support staff at any emergency or specialty hospital in the country,” says Dr. Shadwick.

Dr. Shadwick is also an integral member of AERC’s senior leadership team. As Chief Medical Officer, he assists Dr. Karen Reynhout, CEO, in setting the standards of medical care and growing the emergency and specialty service offerings at AERC.

When he isn’t working, Dr. Shadwick enjoys spending time with his wife, Mey, and three kids Sophie, Robert, and Lucy. Although children have taken priority over his previous hobbies, Dr. Shadwick hopes to eventually introduce his oldest daughter, Sophie, to the thrills of falconry.
