Have you ever wondered, what is a veterinary referral center? At Animal Emergency & Referral Center of Minnesota, we often get asked this question.
Let’s put it like this. You have a doctor who is responsible for helping you stay healthy in a lot of ways. But, if you were to acquire a heart condition, your doctor might refer you to a specialist in heart medicine, or a cardiologist.
The same types of specialists exist in the veterinary profession: cardiologists, internists, dentists, surgeons, dermatologists, ophthalmologists, oncologists, as well as specialists in critical care, toxicology, behavior….the list goes on and on. If your pet needs the care that one of these specialists can provide, your family veterinarian might refer you to a veterinary referral center. Or, if you don’t have a family veterinarian, you might find a veterinary referral center online and refer yourself.
