This is the time of year many of us think about what we are thankful for. We take the time to appreciate our blessings and those we share our lives with. As a lifelong animal lover who has shared my home and my heart with many wonderful creatures, I am grateful for animals and I am truly thankful for the many lessons they teach.
Here are just 10 reasons why:
Reliability: There is no better friend than one you can count on no matter what. Animals exemplify what it means to be there, always. I am grateful for that.
Loyalty: How good does it feel to know you are their person, their number one? Others can come along, but they can never, and will never replace you. We’re our pet’s everything, I am grateful for that.
Patience: Pets have no problem waiting for something that they want. A dropped bite of your sandwich, a walk at the end of a long day, and snuggle time. Patience pays off, and when it does, it’s oh so worth the wait. Animals teach us that good things come to those who wait. I am grateful for that.
Guardian of secrets: Tell them anything at any time and your secret is safe. Trust means everything. Earn it, deserve it, and always give it back. Having a pet means always having someone who will listen without judgment. I am grateful for that.
Compassion: Be kind. Be gentle. Care. Even if there is nothing in it for you. Animals do this every single day. I am grateful for that.
Simplicity: An empty box, a new toy, a paper towel roll, find the joy! We experience the feeling of joy differently, just find yours and immerse yourself in it. Animals share and create joy and it’s contagious! I am grateful for that.
Tolerant: Animals teach us to understand that we all have struggles and shortcomings. We all make mistakes. Give people a chance and maybe a second chance. Pets help us to practice tolerance. I am grateful for that.
Resilience: If you fall down, are failed, are forgotten, or don’t get what you want… try and then try again. Animals show us there is strength and grace in being resilient. I am grateful for that.
Humor: Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself, to be the one that they’re laughing at. Making people smile is one of the best qualities of animals. I am grateful for that.
Love: Pets teach us to love fully, with their whole self, without judgment or expectation or for what they might get in return. I am grateful for that.
During the Thanksgiving holiday and always, remember the lessons that our pets teach us. Love more. Do better. Assume nothing. Needless. Smile often. And realize just how blessed you are. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
