Sarah Humphrey, DVM, DACVECC, one of our board-certified criticalists, graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. When she started vet school, she wanted to be an equine veterinarian. By the time she graduated, she had changed her mind and knew that she wanted to be a small animal specialty veterinarian. She then completed a one-year rotating internship at Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, a very busy emergency and referral practice. She worked as an emergency veterinarian at GSVS until 2007, when she moved back to the Midwest to be closer to family. She worked for an additional year at an emergency and referral practice in the Chicagoland area and began a residency at the Animal Emergency Center in Milwaukee, WI in 2008 now Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists. She completed her residency in Fall of 2011. Following her residency, she worked as a staff criticalist for a referral hospital in the Chicagoland area, after which she joined AERC! She received notification of her board certification in emergency and critical care in October 2014.
Dr. Humphrey’s professional interests include trauma, metabolic emergencies, and mechanical ventilation. She particularly enjoys the attention to detail that is required of a critical care specialist. She feels privileged to be able to observe the depth of the human-animal bond and to guide families through their time of crisis.
Her "kids" include two dogs (an energetic lab mix named Eli and an Siberian Husky named Kaia) a cat named Rastus (who thinks he’s a dog!) and a precocious toddler.
Outside of work, Dr. Humphrey enjoys snowboarding, hiking, and really just about anything outside. She loves music but can’t play any instrument to her perpetual disappointment, and she hopes to travel more in the future.

At AERC, we recognize that the need for quality care doesn’t stop outside our walls. That’s why we want to provide our clients with tools and information that they can use both before and after their clinic visit.
